How to Form Tidy Habits

Are you envious of your super-clean friends? You know the ones – they have so much going on, yet whenever you go over to their houses they’re absolutely spotless. How do they do it? They clean habitually! Turn these small tasks into tidy habits and your home will be spotless too.

Put your clothes away

All the time! When you get home from work and get changed into your comfy clothes, don’t just drape your suit jacket over a chair – put clothes to be worn again in the wardrobe, and dirty clothes straight into the laundry hamper. Don’t procrastinate putting the clean laundry away, either. It’s not the big job it seems!

Take your shoes off at the door

If you simply stop wearing shoes inside you’ll find you need to wash your floors much less frequently. Make it fun by treating yourself to some comfortable slippers to wear inside.

Make your bed

It takes two minutes to make your bed after you get up, and it makes your room seem instantly neater. You shouldn’t have to do all the beds, though – get your family in the habit too!

Wipe down benches after every use

Wiping things down throughout the day not only keeps surfaces looking perfect, it stops scraps and spills from becoming dried on, which would just make your job harder later.

Clean as you cook

When a meal’s in the oven or bubbling away on the stove you can get your cleaning done. Put away your ingredients, wipe down the bench, do the dishes that you have finished using. If you do this all you’ll have to do after dinner is the plates you ate off and a pot or pan – a much less daunting task.

Do the dishes straight away

Dishes left sitting for too long start feeling like an accusation. Just get them over and done with, then wipe down your sink so it’s fresh and ready to go again.

Deal with mail daily

Dealing with mail doesn’t mean leaving it in a pile on the bench. As it comes in throw out any junk mail, put open bills in your home management spot, then file them or throw them out once they’re paid.

Wipe down the bathroom sink

Keep a cloth in an inconspicuous spot in the bathroom and wipe it down after you brush your teeth in the morning. The absence of spilled toothpaste will be sweet relief!

Book a cleaner

Those super-clean friends? They have a cleaner. If you get into tidy habits for the small things, then hire a cleaner for fortnightly deep cleans you’ll be one of those super-clean people. Welcome to the club!
