9 DIYs to try When it’s Cold Outside

When it’s cold and grey outside the best thing to do is have your fun indoors, and make your home look great while you’re at it. Grab some friends and some supplies and have a crafternoon with these DIYs to try when it’s cold outside.

  1. Macrame plant hangers
These classics of the 70s are back in a big way, and we just love the relaxed, bohemian aesthetic they give a space. Plus, you can never have too many plants inside! Try one of these patterns on Apartment Therapy.
  2. Woven wall hanging
Woven wall hangings add a beautiful textural element to a room, and the repetitive nature of weaving is very meditative. Perfect for a rainy day. This HonestlyWTF tutorial shows you how to do it without splashing out on a proper loom.
  3. Neon sign
Bring a bit of kitsch into the equation with a neon sign. These can be super expensive to buy, but with EL Wire you can make your own with limited funds and zero electrical skills. We’ve found a couple of helpful tutorials – this one with an acrylic backing board requires a drill, while this simpler sign doesn’t.
  4. Terrarium
Add some living art to a table or windowsill with a DIY terrarium. These tiny greenhouses are perfect for filling with a variety of plants, moss, and decorative elements.
  5. Arm knit blanket
A chunky knit blanket is just what you need to really bump up the cosy factor at home this winter. Plus they are ridiculously quick project – you could be curled up on the couch with your new blanket in 45 minutes! We found this tutorial on Simply Maggie.
  6. Pom pom rug
If you love the texture and cosiness of sheepskin rugs, but prefer a cruelty-free alternative, this pom pom rug tutorial is for you. Go for classic white, or add a fluffy splash of colour.
  7. Slouchy beanie
Keep your head toasty and warm with this crocheted slouch beanie. It’s a great beginner’s crocheting project – ideal if you’re planning a trip to the snow this winter.
  8. Cosy curtains
Keep the warmth in at night with some creative curtains. There are all sorts of DIYs you can try, from woven to chunky stripes, ruffles, and fancy gold leaf embellished drapes.
  9. Slippers
Upcycle an old jumper into a warm pair of slippers to keep your toes nice and toasty this winter. Reducing your footprint, warming your feet!
