15 Pre-Holiday Home Preparation Tips

Are you escaping the winter chill to go on a nice tropical holiday? Or embracing it and heading to the snow? Either way, colour us jealous! We’ve got some tips to keep your home safe while you’re away, and a delight to return to.

  1. Hold your mail or have a friend pick it up, and redirect or cancel any large deliveries you’re expecting during that time. You don’t want mail piling up and alerting would-be burglars that you’re not home.
  2. Make sure your bills are paid before you leave so you don’t come home to a house with no electricity.
  3. Save electricity by unplugging appliances. TVs, microwaves, computers and other everyday electrical goods are consuming electricity whenever they’re plugged in.
  4. Make sure you haven’t left any wet clothes in the washing machine – that would not be a pleasant smell to come home to!
  5. Also avoid smells by taking out the garbage. Remember to check every bin.
  6. To keep the toilets and sinks fresh while you’re gone sprinkle a little baking soda in each one.
  7. Book a cleaner to come as close to your leaving date as possible. Coming home to a beautiful, clean house really softens the blow of returning from holidays.
  8. Give the fridge a thorough clean and throw out all perishable items, or donate them to a shelter 0r food bank if they are unopened. If you don’t have time to clean out your fridge yourself, we’re happy to take care of it – simply add a fridge clean extra when you book your cleaner.
  9. If you live in a house or easily accessible apartment you may want to set a lamp or two to a timer to give the suggestion that somebody is home in the evenings. You can buy them from any hardware store.
  10. Freeze a home-cooked meal for when you get back. You’ll likely be exhausted from driving, or jet-lagged and the last thing you’ll want to do is cook!
  11. Arrange for a friend to water your plants or feed your fish while you’re gone.
  12. If you have a lot of home chores that need to be taken care of or pets that get anxious staying away from home it could be worthwhile asking someone to housesit while you’re away.
  13. Put clean sheets on the beds before heading to the airport. There’s nothing better than fresh, crisp sheets when you fall into bed at the end of a trip.
  14. On your way out the door double check that you’ve locked all doors and windows so your home is nice and secure.
  15. Leave a spare key with a friend in case you have any mishaps while you’re away.
